Thankful Trees: A Craft for Gratitude

Thankful Trees: A Craft for Gratitude

November is a wonderful time to reflect on gratitude, and a "Thankful Tree" is a beautiful way to visualize this sentiment - especially for littles.

Start by gathering materials: a large sheet of paper or cardboard for the tree trunk and branches, and colorful construction paper for the leaves. Together, create a tree by drawing or cutting out the trunk and branches. Once the tree is ready, invite each family member to write something they are thankful for on a leaf and attach it to the tree. Use leaves that you collect outside, trace your hand and use that as the “leaf” or you can order fake or plastic leaves online for crafts.  This activity can spark meaningful conversations about gratitude and can be a fun way to learn what each family member values.

As you create the leaves, encourage kids to think beyond the usual answers. Instead of just family and friends, they might express gratitude for simple things like their favorite toy, a sunny day, or a recent fun experience. This not only teaches them to appreciate the little joys in life but also helps build emotional intelligence as they learn to articulate their feelings.

Display the Thankful Tree prominently in your home. Each week, you can revisit the tree, adding new leaves and discussing what’s changed in your lives. This tradition can become become a cherished part of your family's November routine, leading up to Thanksgiving and beyond. Plus, it’s a craft that can be updated annually, making it a lasting family project.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
