As the leaves turn vibrant shades of orange, red, and gold, there’s no better time to take the family out to the farm for a day of autumn adventures. Visiting a farm in the fall offers a unique blend of learning, exploration, and just plain fun! Here are our favorite things we did this weekend at Coonamessett Farm on Cape Cod with our family:
1. Pumpkin Picking
No fall farm trip is complete without a visit to the pumpkin patch! Let your kids wander through rows of plump pumpkins, each one a potential masterpiece. Encourage them to pick their favorites, and don’t forget to take lots of pictures! You can also turn this into a fun learning opportunity by discussing the different types of pumpkins and how they grow. As we overheard one parent say to their child, “you don’t choose the pumpkin - the pumpkin chooses you.” Hahaha.
2. Scavenger Hunt with a Witch
Add a magical twist to your farm visit with a scavenger hunt led by a friendly witch! Our kids helped her by gathering ingredients for her potion, searching the farm for items like colorful leaves, special stones, and unique vegetables. This engaging activity not only fuels their imagination but also encourages teamwork as they race to complete the witch’s list. Try creating your own at home - see our most recent reel with ideas for the special “potion.”
3. Halloween Craft Area
We got creative at the Halloween craft area! Kids made their own spooky crafts. This hands-on experience is perfect for sparking creativity, allowing kids to take home their handmade treasures as keepsakes from their day on the farm.
4. Bounce House Fun
Let your kids burn off some energy in the bounce house! This inflatable play area was a hit with children of all ages, providing a safe space to jump, bounce, and laugh. It’s a fantastic way to add some extra excitement to your farm visit!
5. Hayrides
Jumping onto a hayride is a classic fall activity that the whole family will enjoy. As you bounce along the fields, take in the beautiful fall scenery. Many farms use hayrides to transport visitors to different attractions, like pumpkin patches or apple orchards. It’s a fun way to see more of the farm while enjoying the crisp autumn air.
6. Visiting the Animals
No farm visit would be complete without meeting the animals! Your kids will love visiting the alpacas, chickens, turkeys, donkeys, miniature horses, and bunnies. Each animal offers a unique experience, whether it’s petting the soft fur of an alpaca or watching bunnies hop around. This interaction is both educational and delightful, creating lasting memories. If you stop at Coonamessett Farm - we highly recommend saying “hi” to our favorite alpaca, Pippin.
A visit to the farm in the fall is more than just an outing; it’s an opportunity for families to bond, learn, and experience the beauty of nature together. From pumpkin picking to scavenger hunts, hayrides, and animal encounters, the activities are plentiful and filled with joy. So grab your jackets - or if it is anything like this weekend, tshirts! - pack some snacks, and head out to your local farm for a day of autumnal fun that your kids will cherish for years to come!
