Dream Winter Weekend Away at Big Picture Farm

Four couples. Nine kids. One unforgettable Vermont escape.

There is something about Vermont in the winter that feels like stepping into a snow globe — quiet, magical, and just slow enough to let you breathe again.

A few weekends ago, we packed up four families (yes… four couples and nine kids) and headed north for what turned into one of our favorite winter memories ever at Big Picture Farm in Townshend, Vermont.

And somehow? It was equal parts peaceful and wildly fun.

The Setting: A Real-Life Winter Postcard

Snow-covered fields. Rolling hills. Cozy farmhouse warmth with a glowing fire. Goats tucked into their barns.

Big Picture Farm is a working goat dairy and confectionery farm — known for their award-winning goat milk caramels — but what makes it special is how personal and welcoming it feels.

From the moment we arrived, the farm team was incredibly responsive and kind. Anything we needed — schedule changes, logistics questions, local recommendations — they were on it immediately. It made traveling with a big group feel seamless (which is saying something with nine kids involved).

THE FARM TOUR - the highlight!

The absolute highlight of the weekend was our private tour of the farm.

The kids got to:

  • See the goats up close
  • Learn how the farm operates
  • Ask approximately 700 questions
  • See where their famous candies are made

And then… the tasting the delish caramels at the shop where we picked up some sweet treats to treasure this experience.

Their caramels are next level. Creamy, rich, perfectly balanced — and knowing they’re made right there on the farm makes them taste even sweeter. Watching the kids experience where food actually comes from (and then sample it!) was such a full-circle moment.

Educational and delicious? Win.

AND THEN . . . THE KIDS FIRST RAVE

Just when we thought the weekend couldn’t get better… we staged what the kids are now calling:

“The Vermont Rave.”

Inside a giant inflatable igloo (yes, really), we brought from Boston for the kids:

  • Put on matching pajamas
  • Loaded up on glow sticks
  • Rocked temporary tattoos
  • Danced like absolute maniacs

Music pumping. Glow necklaces flying. Parents laughing in the corner.

It was chaotic. It was hilarious. It was pure childhood joy.

And honestly? Watching nine kids completely lose themselves in silly fun while snow fell outside might be my favorite memory of the whole trip.

Why Big Picture Farm Was So Special

Beyond the beauty and the fun, what stood out most was how intentional everything felt.

Big Picture Farm isn’t just a place to stay — it’s a working farm built with care, creativity, and purpose. You feel it in:

  • The thoughtful accommodations
  • The hands-on experience
  • The incredible products
  • The warmth of the team

It made a large-group winter getaway feel intimate and easy.

THE ULTIMATE WEEKEND AWAY

Four couples. Nine kids.

Snow boots everywhere.

Caramel wrappers on the counter.

Glow sticks galore.

It was the ultimate winter reset — the kind that fills your cup and reminds you how good it feels to gather your people and just be together.

If you’re dreaming of a Vermont winter escape that blends rustic charm, hands-on farm experiences, and cozy family fun, Big Picture Farm is pure magic.

We’re already talking about when we can go back.

And next time? We just might have to make the trip for the summer to enjoy the pool and grounds in a whole new season.
