Cape Cod: Heritage Gardens with Kids

Cape Cod: Heritage Gardens with Kids

Having worked here when I was in high school, it was so cool to come back and visit this special place with my kids.  Honestly, I dont even know if I would have tackled this on my own but now that I did it - in between thunder and rain one afternoon - I am confident that it would be totally doable to take both kids back (stroller-less!) to explore some more.  One day just simply wasn’t enough.

A friend invited us to go one rainy afternoon before meeting for dinner and suddenly the storm halted and allowed us to venture into Heritage Museum & Gardens with our kids.  We headed into the park and were lucky enough to wake or two youngest from their naps in the car and greet a trolley to take us to our first stop.

The trolley driver was so knowledgeable and even taught us about my new favorite plant - the Pinky Winky - on our way to the carousel.  The Pinky Winky, for your information, was named after the granddaughter of the horticulturist that discovered it.  She really loved Teletubbies and this was a name from the show.  Here is a photo - these were so gorgeous.

As we reached the carousel - we were the only ones there.  The place felt like magic as the kids climbed onboard, choosing any animal they wished to ride.

After we took advantage of the multiple family restrooms before heading to “Hidden Hollow.”  I never would have been able to imagine such an enchanted place as we all walked through the hidden trails to find a giant telescope peering through the cascading trees into a place of wonderment.  There was a giant treehouse glistening in the rain drops across the path and multiple stages and places to explore, build and create with all natural products.  Tree stumps made our path through the woods as we climbed to the top of the treehouse.

The kids loved to look out and see everything below while pretending they were aboard a giant pirateship.  It was so adorable and fun.

We left here and passed a fun food truck night with a band and live entertainment on the green before heading back passed a waterfall, a replica Wampanoag designed canoe the kids enjoyed exploring, a pond, a windmill, a waterfall, a cafe and shop before making it back to the parking lot as the next batch of thunderclouds began falling

We can’t wait to go back and explore the car museum or make it to a concert.  If you are heading to Cape Cod, the Heritage Museum & Gardens is a great way to spend a day, an afternoon or kill some time while traffic dies down.  See you soon!
