When it comes to planning a family getaway, few places can compete with the charm and beauty of Martha's Vineyard. Just a short ferry ride from the mainland, this idyllic island is a treasure trove of fun activities, stunning scenery, and delicious food, making it the perfect destination for a day trip or a weekend adventure. Recently, my family sailed over to Martha's Vineyard for the weekend, and I’m excited to share why it’s so easy—and enjoyable—to escape to this enchanting spot.
Accessible Adventure
One of the best things about Martha's Vineyard is its accessibility. Whether you're coming from Boston, Providence, or New York, the journey to the island is a breeze. The ferry ride itself is part of the adventure, with breathtaking views of the ocean and the chance to spot seals or dolphins along the way. As soon as we arrived, the island welcomed us with its fresh sea breeze and warm community vibe, setting the tone for a perfect getaway. Oak Bluffs was where we spent most of our time on this trip and it really does feel like such a great community. We did stop in Vineyard Haven for their final edition of First Fridays - they hold these the first Friday of the month through the whole summer. It did not disappoint! Always check with @MVVacay online, instagram, or their app in the Apple Store for all the hot takes on events happening.
Fun for Everyone
We kicked off our trip with a visit to one of the island's beloved arcades. With games for all ages, from classic pinball to modern interactive challenges, the arcade was a hit with everyone. Watching my kids’ faces light up as they won tickets and played together reminded me of the joy of family bonding. Afterward, we wandered through local shops filled with unique souvenirs and artisan crafts, providing a perfect opportunity to pick up mementos of our adventure.
Culinary Delights
There are so many great places to try but here are a few of our favorite around the island:
Oak Bluffs: Back Door Donuts (they did our after party donut delivery for our wedding and even did our wedding cake!), Sand Bar if youre looking for some easy bites while keeping your toes in the sand and kids can watch the boats coming in, Offshore Ale Co. for a fun bite with great beer options close to the park, The Sweet Life Cafe - we went for brunch but cant wait to make it back for other meals
Vineyard Haven: The Attic, The Black Dog Tavern
Edgartown: The Atlantic, The Wharf, Harborview Hotel, The Seafood Shanty, Atria - downstairs for the best burger of your life, The Port Hunter, The Covington - our favorite stop in town and always the first pick for date night, The Newes from America
Soaking Up the Fall Atmosphere
Visiting Martha's Vineyard in the fall is truly magical. The vibrant autumn leaves painted the landscape in warm hues, and the crisp air was invigorating. We took a leisurely stroll along the beach, collecting seashells and taking in the stunning ocean views. Every shell became a little token of our adventure, a reminder of the laughter and joy we shared. There’s something special about wandering along the shore, listening to the waves, and making memories as a family.
A Memorable Family Experience
As the day came to a close, we watched the sunset paint the sky in shades of orange and pink, reflecting on the incredible memories we had created together. From the arcade laughter to the shared meals and the treasure hunt for seashells, every moment felt special. Martha's Vineyard is not just a destination; it's a place where families can reconnect, share experiences, and create lasting memories.
Conclusion
Whether you’re planning a quick day trip or a weekend escape, Martha's Vineyard offers a wealth of activities that cater to families. The easy access, delightful attractions, and breathtaking scenery make it an ideal getaway that won’t disappoint. So pack your bags, grab your family, and head to this charming island—your next adventure awaits, complete with seashells and smiles!
